Conwy grave Hugh Griffith
Hugh Griffith (d.1865)
This slate tombstone has an inserted section of slate roughly mid way along. The inscription lists several members of the Griffith family who are buried here.
It’s thought that Hugh Griffith, a ship’s carpenter, went missing at sea, was presumed dead and was commemorated with an inscription on the tombstone beneath the details of his wife Grace and their children John and Jane, who had died in childhood. When he reappeared, so the story goes, his memorial inscription was chiselled out and replaced with the inserted section, on which is carved a Biblical quotation about being brought up “from the depths”. He was 79 when he died on 27 August 1865.
