Tombes de guerre canadiennes, Bodelwyddan
Plus de 80 militaires canadiens, hommes et femmes, sont inhumes au cimetière de l’église St Margaret (Ste Marguerite), a Bodelwyddan. Ils faisaient partie d’un groupe de 17 000 militaires détenus au camp de Kinmel Park, a peu de distance à l’ouest de l’église, à la fin de la Première Guerre Mondiale, et pendant des mois par la suite. La plupart (environ 15 000) s’étaient battus en France et étaient revenus en Grande Bretagne pour attendre les navires qui devaient les rapatrier.
Le camp était divise en sections, une pour chaque région du Canada, par exemple: Alberta, Montréal et Manitoba. L’épidémie européenne de grippe de 1918-1919 a décimé le camp. Les Canadiens qui s’y trouvaient, étaient de plus en plus frustres d’être détenus en Grande Bretagne, si longtemps apres la fin des hostilités. Ils s’ennuyaient, leur nourriture était monotone et ils avaient peu ou pas d’argent pour acheter de petites choses telles que des cigarettes. Leurs officiers, cependant, passaient des soirées à Rhyl ou visitaient Londres.
Fin février 1919, ces troupes ont appris que de gros navires destines à les ramener chez eux, avaient été affectés pour ramener des Américains qui avaient vu relativement peu de service actif sur le Continent. Les 4 et 5 mars 1919, des incidents ont éclaté au camp et les autochtones ont eu peur que les rebelles ne pillent Rhyl. Cinq soldats canadiens ont été tues (selon la version officielle) et 28 blesses. Quatre morts sur les cinq sont enterres au cimetière de St Margaret, y compris William Tarasevitch, identifie par les autorités comme étant le meneur. Il y a, au moins, un témoin pour dire que le nombre de fatalités était plus important. Fin mars, on avait trouvé des navires pour rapatrier les 15 000 Canadiens de Kinmel.
Quand un grand nombre de jeunes gens en colère, revenant des combats, sont rentres en Grande Bretagne, le gouvernement britannique a eu peur qu’une révolution communiste, semblable à la Révolution russe de 1917, ne se déclenche à Liverpool. Selon une certaine théorie, les Canadiens auraient été gardés à Kinmel pour étouffer une rébellion de ce style. Cependant, il est possible qu’ils aient été les victimes d’un système de démobilisation submerge, à la fin de la guerre. Il y a également eu des émeutes dans d’autres camps de Grande Bretagne.
Il n’y a pas que des Canadiens enterres dans cette partie du cimetière. Il y a une personne de Newport, au sud du Pays de Galles. Quelques-unes avaient émigré de Grande Bretagne au Canada ou aux Etats-Unis.
Les deux femmes qui s’y trouvent faisaient partie du corps médical.
Le monument commémoratif, situe parmi les tombes, porte l’inscription suivante : « En mémoire des militaires canadiens qui sont morts au camp de Kinmel Park pendant la Grande Guerre. Ce monument a été érigé par leurs camarades. Leurs noms vivront pour toujours dans notre mémoire »
