Wrexham Memorial Royal Marines

The following men from the area died in service with the Royal Marines in the Second World War.

  • Arthur Birch, Marine EX/5114. Died 14/09/1942, aged 25. Royal Marines 11th Bn. R.M. Group, M.N.B.D.O.1. Comemmorated at Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of George and Charlotte Birch; husband of Margaret Birch, of Queen's Park, Wrexham.
  • James Humphreys, Marine PLY/X100359. Died 28/04/1945. Royal Marines, HMS Exeter. Buried at Ambon War Cemetery.
  • Keith Edward Chambers Knight, Marine CH/X 106938. Died 25/04/1943, aged 19. Royal Marines HML.C.G.(L) 15. Buried at Milford Haven cemetery. On the night of 25 April 1943, Keith was aboard one of a pair of Landing Craft Gun vessels being delivered from the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast to Falmouth. There were 79 Royal Marines and sailors on board. The vessels were denied shelter from a gale at Fishguard Harbour, and made for Milford Haven. After rounding St Ann's Head, both landing craft sank and bodies were washed ashore in Freshwater Bay. More information is available on our page about the site of the tragedy.
  • Trevor Owen Wynne, Marine PO/X121539. Died 11/08/1944, aged 19. Royal Marines A 276. Buried at Coedpoeth cemetery and memorial garden. Son of Richard M Wynne and Lizzie Wynne, of Coedpoeth.
