Prestatyn grave of Catherine Maria Jones

Grave of Catherine Maria Jones (d.1906)

Photo of grave of Catherine Maria JonesThis gravestone records the deaths of Catherine Maria Jones, her child and her husband in the space of just three months.

Catherine’s parents were shoemaker Jonathan Griffiths and his wife Winifred (nee Proffit). They lived in Prestatyn and had 10 children, six of whom had died by 1911.

In summer 1904 Catherine married Henry Jones, the rural postman for the area between Prestatyn and Gronant. The couple lived at 1 Brook Villa and played an active part in the establishment of Capel Horeb, the Welsh-language Wesleyan chapel in what was then known as the Towyn area of Prestatyn.

Catherine gave birth to their son, Gryffudd Iorwerth, in April 1906. Soon afterwards, on 26 April, she died of pneumonia. She was 30 years old. She was buried here on 29 April but the grave was soon reopened, after Gryffudd’s death at the age of 17 days.

Henry never got over the shock of his double bereavement. He was too ill to return to work, and died on 30 July 1906, aged 31. The grave was opened again for his interment on 2 August.
