On 18 November 1918, a week after the First World War ended, Monmouth Town Council began to collect donations for a war memorial. The memorial was designed by J Reginald Harding, a civil engineer and nephew of Lord Llangattock, with later amendments by W Clarke of Llandaff, the firm which constructed the memorial.

One of the employees, master sculptor William W Taylor, spent 304 hours producing a scale model of the serviceman statue in clay – shown in the lower photo – and 675 hours carving the monument from Portland stone, with help from Mr Ellis, one of the company’s masons. The monument was put in place in August 1921. The final bill came to £725.

The memorial was unveiled on 6th October 1921 by Major Reade and dedicated by the Rev Canon Harding. In November 1921 it was reported that the local Lodge of Freemasons would fund a granolitic step around the base of the monument and levelling and paving the area in front of it.

The names of the First World War dead were inscribed on the memorial (as you can see in the upper photo). The bronze plaques which we see today (including ones listing the FWW dead) were created later.

With thanks to Mike Statham for information about the monument
