Parents did not know of the fate of their son and in February 1916 wrote to the army record’s office in Shrewsbury explaining that they had not heard from him since September 1915. Many months later they received a letter telling them that James had been killed.

  • Thompson, John Owen, Serjeant 14536. Royal Welsh Fusiliers. (11th Battalion). Died 28/6/1918. Buried Sarigol Military Cemetery. Described as the “life and soul” of the company and regularly organised concerts and entertainment for the entire battalion. He played the banjo and took the instrument on the train when he left Llandudno.
  • Tonge, Septimus, Major. Machine Gun Corps. Died 9/5/1918 aged 38. Buried SS. Eleri and Mary's Churchyard, Llanrhos. Son of Robert and Mary Tonge. While at home on leave, Septimus committed suicide. In a note he revealed that he could not cope with going back to the “Front”.
  • Turner, Ernest Muncaster, Corporal 629567. Canadian Infantry - Western Ontario Regiment (47th Battalion). Died 16/3/1917 aged 36. Buried Villers Station Cemetery. Son of Edwin and Margaret Turner of Cardiff; husband of Elizabeth Turner of 1183, 18th Street, Edmonds, British Columbia, Canada.
  • Walker, Edgar, Private 16591. Royal Welsh Fusiliers (16th Battalion). Died 24/8/1918 aged 34. Buried Ovillers Military Cemetery. Son of Mrs Mary Walker of Guildford, Lloyd Street. Born in Mottram Longdale. Enlisted in Llandudno.
  • Walker, John Arthur, Captain. Royal Welsh Fusiliers (10th Battalion). Died 19/2/1916 aged 24. Buried Reninghelst New Military Cemetery. Son of John and Margaret Walker of Osborne House, Llandudno, close to this war memorial. His family's wealth came from the Walker brewery (later Tetley Walker). Educated at Shrewsbury College and while an undergraduate at Cambridge University joined the Officers Training Corps.

  • Walmsley, Robert. Gunner L11078. Royal Field Artillery (149th Brigade). Died 18/7/1918 aged 31. Buried Reninghelst New Military Cemetery.
  • Whewell, John James, Corporal M2/07923. Army Service Corps attached to Royal Garrison Artillery (Mobile Anti-Aircraft Battery). Died 3/11/1918 aged 28. Buried St. Sever Cemetery. Son of James William and Mary Ann Whewell of Radcliffe, Manchester, England; husband of Primrose Jones (formerly Whewell) of 6, Madoc Street. Brother-in-law of Frederick William Jones, above. Died in Rouen General Hospital of pneumonia.
  • Wilde, Charles Pryce, Company Quartermaster Sergeant 25007. Royal Welsh Fusiliers. (17th Battalion). Died 20/2/1916. Buried Vieille-Chapelle New Military Cemetery. Son of William Wilde of Wrexham; husband of Laura Wilde of 2, Gloddaeth Cottage, 19, Bodafon Street. Wilde was working for the Canadian Pacific Railway at the outbreak of the war with his eldest son, also Charles. Both returned to Britain and enlisted in the army. 
  • Williams, Ellis, Shoeing Smith 2857. Royal Field Artillery. Died 15/6/1916 aged 53. Buried Glanwydden Cemetery. Father of Ellis J Williams, below.
  • Williams, Ellis J, Sapper 96444. Corps of Royal Engineers. (Signal Depot). Died 12/1/1916 aged 21. Buried Glanwydden Cemetery. Son of Ellis Williams. He died of pneumonia while on leave. Born and enlisted in Llandudno.
  • Williams, Hugh, Private 17507. Royal Scots (B Company, 15th Battalion). Died 28/4/1917 aged 25. Arras Memorial. Son of William and Mary Williams of 3, East Parade. Killed by shell fire while attacking an enemy position.
  • Williams, Hugh Edward, Private 49983. Royal Welsh Fusiliers (9th Battalion). Died 22/3/1918 aged 29.
  • Williams, Jack, Private 44005. Royal Welsh Fusiliers (9th Battalion). Died 22/10/1918. Buried SS. Eleri and Mary's Churchyard. Son of Mrs A J Williams of Alexandra Villas, Caroline Road. Suffered gas poisoning in France. Returned to Llandudno to recover but died of his injuries. His wife and two youngest children died before him, leaving his 7-year-old daughter an orphan.

  • Williams, John Evan Serjeant 20346. Royal Welsh Fusiliers (14th Battalion). Died 15/6/1917 aged 35. Buried Bard Cottage Cemetery. Son of Robert and Sarah E Williams of 9, Council Street. Was a talented footballer, “one of the most skilful players in North Wales”.
  • Williams, John Richard Henry, Serjeant 13282. Royal Welsh Fusiliers (9th Battalion). Died 25/10/1916 aged 42. Thiepval Memorial. Husband of Lydia Williams (nee Jones) lodging at 29, Alexandra Road. Died on way to hospital after being hit by shrapnel just above the heart.

Son of Mr and Mrs H Williams of Llandudno; husband of Amy Evelyn Williams of Inglehurst, Sylva Gardens. Born in Llandudno. Studied at Westminster College of Pharmacy and graduated as a chemist.

Son of Thomas and Margaret Williams; husband of Ann Williams of Silverdale, Lloyd Street. Was a postman in Llanrhos for 15 years before enlisting. Left one child.
