Ruthin War Memorial

Ruthin war memorial

This memorial was unveiled in December 1925 by Lord Kenyon to commemorate the local people who had fallen in the First World War. A further 30 names were added in 2006, following research by local historians David Williams and Geraint Owen.

The names of people who died in the Second World War are displayed on panels on the wall behind the column. Also on the wall is a memorial to a local soldier killed in the Falklands conflict in 1982.

The monument, made of concrete, has a finely detailed Celtic cross above a depiction of Archangel St Michael, traditionally associated with victory in war. Further down, a memorial inscription in English flanks an image of a sword. On the plinth is a Welsh quotation from the Welsh national anthem: “Dros ryddid collasant eu gwaed” (“They lost their blood for freedom”).
