Whitford war memorial

The village’s war memorial consists of tablets inside the church, listing 10 local men who fell in the First World War and four who were killed in the Second World War. Scroll down for their details.

The Hon John Llewelyn Lloyd-Mostyn was son of the 4th Baron Mostyn. He joined the Royal Navy and was on leave in Glasgow when he was shot dead, aged 28, by a fellow midshipman who had pointed a pistol at him as a prank. The latter was put on trial but acquitted of culpable homicide. Lord Mostyn told the inquest that nobody was to blame for the death, which had happened when his son and comrades had been working with a revolver, apparently thinking it wasn’t loaded. Lord and Lady Mostyn gave two oak desks for the church sanctuary in memory of their son.

On the church’s north wall is a war shrine, presented by Lord Mostyn in 1917 and made of wood and copper from the training ship Britannia.

In 1949 a new Bible was bought for the church as a memorial to the men who died in the Second World War.

Some of the church’s altar ornaments were previously at the army chapel in Kinmel Park camp during the First World War. Many Canadians died there in 1918-19 and are buried in Bodelwyddan churchyard.
