Helicopter crash memorial, Llanberis
The twin slate plaques by the shore of Llyn Padarn commemorate three teenage cadets who were killed when a helicopter plunged into the lake in 1993.
Four cadets from the Air Training Corps in East Lancashire boarded the Westland Wessex helicopter at RAF Valley, on Anglesey, on 12 August 1993 for a training flight. The tail rotor failed while the aircraft was in the vicinity of Llyn Padarn, and the helicopter fell into the lake. All three crew members and one of the cadets managed to free themselves and survived.
The cadets who died were: Amanda Elizabeth Louise Whitehead, aged 17, of Jesmond Avenue, Bury; Mark Frazer Oakden, 16, of Gisburn Drive, Bury; and Christopher Alan Bailey, 15, of Berne Avenue, Horwich.
The accident happened during the school summer holidays, and many people witnessed the helicopter spinning around as it fell.
