Llysfaen war memorial

Llysfaen war memorial

The village’s war memorial stands inside the churchyard of St Cynfran's Church. It commemorates local men who died in the First and Second World Wars. See below to discover who they were.

The memorial consists of a pillar on which the names of the war dead are inscribed. It's topped by a stone ball bearing a quotation from the Welsh national anthem: “Dros rhyddid collasant eu gwaed”. This translates as: “They lost their blood for freedom.”

Among the men named on the memorial is Ewell Daniell of Winnipeg, Canada. He enlisted at the outbreak of the First World War and fell in love with a local woman while training with the army in North Wales. They married and set up home locally, but Ewell was killed in an aircraft crash in 1916.

Also named is Rev Ivor Morgan Lewis, chaplain on a Royal Navy battleship which was torpedoed off Turkey. His father was rector of Llysfaen.

In January 1919, St Cynfran’s Church was packed for two memorial services, one in English and the other in Welsh, to the men who had died in the First World War. Mrs Clayton of Tanllwyfan-isa, whose son had served, had donated a banner on which the names of the local war dead were embroidered in silk. Local soldiers who had survived the war paraded the banner through the church during the services.
