Llanddaniel-fab war memorial
This memorial, comprising a large upright stone, is dedicated to the local men who died in the First and Second World Wars. To discover who they were, choose a category below.
The names are listed here in the same order as on the memorial.
Below the names is an englyn (a form of short Welsh verse) by the poet Ellis Evans, whose bardic name was Hedd Wyn. He himself was killed in action in Belgium in 1917. The englyn reads:
Ei aberth nid â heibio - ei wyneb
Annwyl nid a'n ango
Er i'r Almaen ystaenio
Ei dwrn dur yn ei waed o.
This translates as:
His sacrifice will not pass by – his dear face
Will not be forgotten
Although Germany stained
Its iron fist in his blood.
About the place-name:
Llanddaniel-fab refers to the son (mab) of Deiniol, dedicatee of Bangor cathedral. A llan was a walled enclosure with a place of worship at its centre. The village was recorded as Llandimoelwab in 1254, as Llanddeynel vab in 1535 and as Llandeiniol-fab in 1639. Now it tends to be known as Llanddaniel, a truncation which was common in print by the First World War.
