In memory of James John Hamilton Prosser

Photo of James ProsserJames Prosser was born at Caerphilly District Miners Hospital in April 1988 to Sarah and Nigel Prosser. James began his education at Hendre Infants’ School in Caerphilly. His family later moved to the Cwmbran area, where he attended Llantarnam Comprehensive School. He played soccer for Cwmbran Celtic FC and hockey for the Fairwater Falcons.

He joined the army in 2008 and in 2009 was posted to A Company, 2nd Battalion The Royal Welsh. He quickly developed an expertise in driving and looking after Warrior armoured vehicles, and would give up his spare time to help other drivers maintain their vehicles. He was said to relish his job and to take each new challenge in its stride.

In July 2009, A Company travelled to Afghanistan, where it was deployed in the province of Helmand. James’ Warrior was hit by an explosion in the Musa Qaleh district and he died in a field hospital on 27 September 2009.

Paying tribute to him, Company Commander Major Huw Jones said: “Private Prosser was fun. His effervescent personality meant that one of his quips was never far from the surface. When they came it was as a bubbling stream of one-liners carrying everyone along with them. I was the victim of his wit more than once. He was an astute and selfless soldier who always put his fellows ahead of himself.”

James' funeral was held at St Gabriel’s Church, Cwmbran, in October 2010, followed by cremation at Gwent Crematorium.
