Capel Curig grave Jonathan Jackson

Grave of Jonathan JacksonJonathan Jackson (d.1848)

Many hoteliers and innkeepers are buried in this churchyard, and Jonathan Jackson represents the many who worked in the hospitality, often in seasonal roles. His gravestone notes that he was “for 40 years a most confidential waiter at the Capel Curig Inn”.

He was 66 years old when he died, and his lifetime spanned the period when Capel Curig was transformed from a scattered group of cottages and farmhouses, in a remote upland valley, to a bustling centre on Thomas Telford’s modern coach road from London to Dublin via Holyhead. Capel Curig was a fashionable holiday destination for the wealthy.

His wife Catherine died aged 36 in 1813 and is also buried here.
