But later that century Britain's attorney general ruled that the charitable homes were funded by John Williams, who was goldsmith to King James I and so loaded with cash that he even lent some of it to Sir John. People lived in the almshouses until the 1970s, and among the last residents was a man who thought he was Winston Churchill.
