Second World War

We have included names and details of men who died and had local connections but are not named on the memorial. Among them are brothers Dennis and Francis O’Reilly, who died within less than a year of each while serving as stokers on Royal Navy ships in the Second World War.

The memorial was unveiled in March 1921. It takes the form of a clock tower topped by an unusual arrangement of four lamps. The four lion heads on the fence which surrounds the memorial were features of the original fence here and were reinstalled when a new fence was needed.

Some of the families who lost loved ones in the First World War had suffered bereavement in October 1913 in the Senghenydd colliery explosion, Britain’s worst mining disaster.
