Cwmcarn war memorial

This memorial was erected to commemorate the men of Cwmcarn and Pontywaun who died in the First World War. The names of those who died in the Second World War were added later, as was the name of a local man killed while serving in Northern Ireland in 1979. To discover who they were, choose a category below.

The memorial was unveiled in 1922 by Sir John Wyndham Beynon, a wealthy industrialist who had served in the army in the First World War. It consists of a stone column topped by a bronze statue of a soldier with his head bowed, his tin battlefield hat on his back and his rifle pointing into the ground.

Two of the men named on the memorial died on the same day in 1940 when their ship, HMS Glorious, was sunk by the German battle cruiser Scharnhorst. One of the men, Kenneth Fell, was only 18 years old.

Two Cwmcarn brothers, James and Thomas Gougerty, belonged to different regiments but died within less than a fortnight of each other in 1944 during the fighting to oust the Nazis from France.
