Llanfyllin war memorial

This memorial was unveiled in September 1920 to commemorate the local men who had died in the First World War. The names of those who died in the Second World War were added to the plinth later. For details of the war dead, choose a category below.

Son of JC and Edith A Lloyd, of The Hall, Llanfyllin. Died of the effects of enemy action on 8/12/1941 at a Machynlleth hospital. Two years earlier, SS Firby was sunk on 11/9/1939. Norman and 33 others were rescued by HMS Fearless and landed at Orkney, Lived at ‘The Hall’.

- Richards, David Geraint Owen, Apprentice. Died 06/06/1941 aged 20. Merchant Navy - SS Tregarthen (London). Commemorated at Tower Hill Memorial. Son of Rev John Harris Richards and Mary Jane Richards of Eirianfa. He was lost when his ship sank north northwest of the Azores, three minutes after being hit by two torpedoes from German submarine U-48. The Master and 44 crew members were lost.
