Abergavenny Second World War memorial

This marble plaque is the town’s memorial to people with local connections who died in the Second World War. You can read details of the fallen below.

The memorial was created in 2005 and was originally displayed upstairs. It was brought down to the Market Hall entrance at the same time as the First World War memorial opposite, so that both would be more visible to the public.

The list of names on the Second World War memorial was compiled by the late Iris Coldrey and by David Yendoll, of Abergavenny Rotary Club. He looked through all editions of local newspapers from 3 September 1939 to 3 September 1947 for notices of war-related deaths. His draft list was published in the Abergavenny Chronicle and Abergavenny Free Press, prompting relatives to come forward with additional names.

Most of the people named on the memorial lived in the town or married someone from Abergavenny. A few had no such connections but died here during the war such as Faqir Muhammad of Pakistan, who had been camped with the Royal Indian Army Service Corps on the river meadows in Abergavenny before he died in 1943. He was buried in Abergavenny.

With thanks to David Yendoll, Byron Jones, Karen Standen, and Adrian Hughes of the Home Front museum, Llandudno. Also to Cheryl Mellor, of the 2/4th Machine Gun Battalion Ex-Members Association, Australia.
