Photo of Reginald Sheppard memorial, Llanharan churchOne of the people named on the war memorial is Betty Kathleen Thorne, a Leading Aircraftwoman in the Women's Auxiliary Air Force. She died in February 1945, aged 22.

Another local woman who died in the Second World War was Ethel May Hayward, killed when the Luftwaffe bombed Canterbury, in Kent, on 1 June 1942. Her parents, Mr and Mrs H Pritchard, lived at 24 Robert Street, Llanharan.

The war memorial was paid for by villagers. It was made at the premises of W Clarke, Llandaff, from Portland Stone. The firm brought in the self-employed master sculptor William W Taylor, who also worked on a similar design for Monmouth war memorial, to model and sculpt the soldier figure.

The memorial originally stood in the square opposite the High Corner pub. It was unveiled in August 1923 by Colonel Bruce, of Lanelay Hall. In 1933 W Clarke moved the memorial to the Welfare Ground playing fields (south of the main railway line), as it obstructed a planned road improvement scheme in its original position.

It was moved to its present location beside Hillside Avenue in October 1960 and rededicated.

Private Reginald Sheppard, who died in France in 1916, is also commemorated by a plaque (pictured here) in the nearby church.
