Ystrad Mynach & Hengoed Cenotaph

Ystrad Mynach & Hengoed cenotaph

The war memorial for the Ystrad Mynach area was unveiled in 1927. It commemorated the local people who died in the First World War. The names of those who died in the Second World War were added later. Choose a category below to read details of the war dead.

There is detailed information about some of the individuals on the website of Gelligaer Historial Society.

Among those named on the memorial are two brothers, Archibald and Claud Lindsay, who were killed just five days apart in 1918. A third brother, George, had been killed in 1917. Their father, who lived at Ystrad Fawr, had fought in the Boer War and later became Justice of the Peace for Glamorgan and for County Dublin. Our page in the brothers’ memory is here.

Ystrad Fawr later housed the headquarters of Rhymney Valley District Council until the 1996 reorganisation of local government, when Caerphilly County Borough Council was created. Ysbyty Ystrad Fawr, the new general hospital for the area, was built on its site and the cenotaph moved to a garden area outside the hospital. A service of rededication for the memorial was held in October 2008. The cenotaph was moved to make way for the present roundabout near Ystrad Fawr. It was near the A472 road, which leads towards the church and Nelson.
