In memory of Robert David Williams

beddgelert_robert_d_williamsRobert David Williams was brought up at Minafon, in Rhyd-ddu. His parents were David and Ann Williams. His paternal great-grandfather was the Rev Thomas Williams, a well-known preacher from Bwlan, Rhyd-ddu, who died in 1870. The family was also associated with Glan Dwr, Rhyd-ddu.

Robert’s parents later moved to Peckers Hill Road, in St Helens, near Liverpool. In summer 1917 Robert enlisted at St Helens. Following training, he went to France in November 1917 as a Private with the Royal Welsh Fusiliers.

On 5 January 1918 he was at the Front in Belgium when he was knocked unconscious by a shell fragment and soon died. He was 22 years old. He is buried at Tyne Cot Cemetery, near Ypres. A funerary sermon was preached for him at the Welsh chapel in St Helens.
