Llandinam war memorial

Llandinam war memorial

This war memorial was unveiled in 1921 to commemorate men from Llandinam parish who died in the First World War. The names of people who died in the Second World War were added later. To discover who they were, choose a category below.

Second World War

Among those named on the memorial are the Lloyd-Jones brothers, Edward and Ivor. Edward had graduated from Cambridge but Ivor never took up the place he was offered there, as the war had broken out and he volunteered for service. Edward died in the ill-fated Gallipoli landings in 1915 and Ivor died in Gaza in 1917.

Mary Bennett of Llandinam lost her husband William and her son David in the space of three weeks in 1917. David was killed in action in Gaza and William died of his wounds in France.

A local casualty of the Second World War was Lord David Davies, who had only recently become the 2nd Baron Davies of Llandinam. He died near Eindhoven in September 1944 when taking part in the liberation of the Netherlands. His aunts had helped the French Red Cross in the First World War and later developed Gregynog as a centre for music and conferences. Oriel Davies (art gallery) in Newtown is named after them.
