The vicar of Aberdaron, Rev Thomas Edward Owen, lost his son Vernon in the First World War. Former Methodist minister Rev JT Pritchard lost his son Alun in 1917, shortly after resigning from the ministry on the death of his father in September 1917.

One of 20 lost when the ship was torpedoed off Ushant, France, while carrying phosphate rock from Tunisia to Falmouth.
  • Hall, Joseph William, Able Seaman Bristol Z/9158. Died 13 December 1917 aged 20. Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve - HMS Stephen Furness. Buried at Aberdaron (St. Hywyn) Old Churchyard. Son of William Henry Hall of 18, Bull Street, West Bromwich. One of 101 lost when the ship, an armed boarding cruiser, was torpedoed off the Isle of Man.

  • Jones, Lewis, Carpenter. Died 20/01/1917 aged 24. Mercantile Marine - SS Bulgarian (Glasgow). Tower Hill Memorial. Son of William and Mary Jones of Isallt, Aberdaron. One of 14 lost when the ship was torpedoed off Fastnet, Ireland, while carrying iron ore from Spain to Liverpool.

Son of Thomas William and Elizabeth Thomas of Crugan Mawe, Rhoshirwaen. One of 11 lost when the ship was torpedoed off Portpatrick, Scotland, while carrying coal from Ayr to Newry.   • Davies, William, Lieutenant Commander. Died 09/04/1941 aged 47. Royal Naval Reserve – HMS Voltaire. Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Son of John and Mary Davies; husband of Ellen Davies of Aberdaron. Address given on war memorial as Llidiardau, Rhoshirwaen. One of 75 who died after a German warship attacked HMS Voltaire, a former passenger liner used as an armed merchant cruiser, off the Cape Verde Islands, in mid-Atlantic.
  • Evans, Evan Jones, Fireman. Died 07/08/1944 aged 37. Merchant Navy - SS Amsterdam (Harwich). Tower Hill Memorial. Son of Ellis and Maggie Evans of Sarn; husband of Laura Jones Evans of Bryngolau, Rhoshirwaen. One of 106 who died after the hospital ship hit a mine off Normandy. The dead included 55 wounded men, 10 medical staff and 11 German prisoners or war.
  • Roberts, Robert Japheth, Fireman. Died 07/01/1944 aged 27. Merchant Navy – SS Kyle Bank (Liverpool). Buried Rhoshirwaun (Bethesda) Baptist Chapelyard. Of 7, Brynffynnon Terrace, Rhoshirwaen.

  • Williams, Hugh Erith, Deck Boy. Died 21/04/1941 aged 19. Merchant Navy - SS Calchas (Liverpool). Tower Hill Memorial. Son of John and Jennie Williams of Brynchwilog, Aberdaron. Born in Bryncroes. One of 24 who died when the ship was torpedoed twice off the Cape Verde Islands, in mid-Atlantic.
