Cwmaman war memorial

Cwmaman war memorial

This memorial, outside the Cwmaman Institute, was unveiled in July 2014. To discover more about the people named on the memorial, see below.

The memorial was commissioned by Cwmaman Local History Group, with help from the Heritage Lottery Fund.

Previously 67 of the local dead of the First World War had been commemorated on a brass plaque inside the Institute. Research by the history group uncovered details of another 15 people who had local connections but were not named on the plaque. The war memorial, and the list below, includes all 82.

The history group intends to add the names of local people who died in later conflicts to the memorial in due course.

We are grateful to the history group for allowing us to draw on their research, which you can see in full here.

Among the men who died was Thomas George Butler. His parents, who lived at Bedlwyn Row, had lost their other son in a colliery accident 13 months earlier. Also commemorated here is Percy Pennington, whose grave at the Somme was shown in national newspapers after King George V was photographed saluting it.

With thanks to Gail Neal, of Cwmaman Local History Group
