Among those named on the memorial are three brothers, David, Samuel and William Hughes, who were all killed in less than a year of each other during the First World War. Also named is Royal Marine Delwyn Davies, one of 79 men who drowned near St Ann’s Head, Pembrokeshire, after a pair of landing craft were denied refuge from a storm at Fishguard Harbour in 1943.

  • William James Anthony, Private, 54593, Welsh Regiment. Son of John and Ann Anthony, of Llangadog, Kidwelly. 13th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 114 Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. He was taken to a base hospital near Boulogne, but died on 21 October 1918, aged 22. Buried at Terlincthun British Cemetery, Wimille, France.
  • John Bidgood Godfrey Ashford, Private, 41211, Dorsetshire Regiment. Son of William Samuel and Mary Jane Ashford, of Exonia Villa, Kidwelly. Born in Exmouth, Devon, and enlisted at Exeter. 6th Battalion, Dorsetshire Regiment, attached to 50 Brigade, 17th (Northern) Division. John was wounded in the Battle of the Selle, and died on 30 October 1918, aged 19. Buried at Awoingt British   Cemetery, France. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • Edgar James Bish, Lance Corporal, 16072, Welsh Regiment. Born in Kidwelly. Son of Robert Andrew and Agnes Bish, of 67 Mansel Street, Port Talbot. 11th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, known as the Cardiff Pals, based at Salonika for most of the war. Edgar died on 18 September 1918, aged 24, during the Second Battle of Doiran. Commemorated on the Doiran Memorial, Greece. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • William Bowry, Private, 57654, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Born in London, moved to Kidwelly before the war and enlisted at Llanelli into the South Wales Borderers. Later transferred to the 16th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, attached to 113 Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. He died at the Somme on 26 August 1918. Buried at Flatiron Copse Cemetery, Mametz, France.
  • David Morris Davies, Lance Corporal, 18624, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Born in Kidwelly and lied there before the war. Enlisted at Llandudno into the 16th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, attached to 113 Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. He was wounded at Ypres and returned to Britain for hospital treatment. Died on 7 August 1917. Buried at Kidwelly (Siloam) Welsh Baptist Chapelyard.
  • Frank Davies, Pioneer, WR/262339, Royal Engineers. Born in Kidwelly, enlisted at Carmarthen into the Liverpool Regiment. Later transferred to the Royal Engineers, Railways section, which ran the rail supply networks on the Western Front. He died of sickness inFrance on 10 September 1918. Buried at Nuits-St. Georges New Communal Cemetery, France.
  • William Evan Davies, Rifleman, 5898, London Regiment. Son of Mr and Mrs Morris Davies,Ferry Road, Kidwelly. Worked in London before the war, and joined the 1/9th Battalion (Queen Victorias Rifles), London Regiment. He was killed during the Battle of Le Transloy on 9 October 1916. Commemorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. 
  • William Howard Davies, Private, 116422, Machine Gun Corps. Born at Llanelli. Enlisted at Pembrey into the 2nd Battalion, South Wales Borderers, but was later posted to the 21st Company, Machine Gun Corps, attached to 30th Division. Taken prisoner near Ypres during the German spring offensive in March 1918, but was wounded during capture. Died of wounds on 15 October 1918 as a POW, aged 35. Buried at Cologne Southern Cemetery, Germany.
  • William Stanley Davies, Private, 25166, West Riding Regiment. Son of David and Elizabeth Davies, of 57, Hillfield, Station Road, Kidwelly. Enlisted at Llanelli into the Army Service Corps. Transferred into the 10th Battalion, West Riding Regiment, attached to 69 Brigade, 23rd Division. Wounded in the Battle of the Menin Road, Ypres, and moved to the Casualty Clearing Station at Remy Sidings where he died of wounds on 25 September 1917, aged 24. Buried at Lijssenthoek Military Cemetery, Belgium. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • David Edmunds, Master, Mercantile Marine. Born at Burry Port. Served as Master of the SS Tangistan. He died, aged 44, when his ship was torpedoed off Scarborough on 9 March 1915 by a German submarine. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial,London.
  • Owen Edwards, Private, 54190, Welsh Regiment. Son of John and Mary Edwards, of Sea View, New Street, Kidwelly. Enlisted at Kidwelly into the 16th Battalion, the Welsh Regiment, attached to 115 Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. Owen died of war wounds at the Norwich Military Hospital on 13 March 1917, aged 22. Buried at Kidwelly (St. Mary) Churchyard.
  • Ivor Emmanuel, Lance Corporal, 275, Welsh Guards. Born in Trimsaran. Husband of Prudence P Emanuel, of Brynygraig, Mynyddygarreg, Kidwelly. Enlisted at Llanelli into the Grenadier Guards but after formation of the Welsh Guards on 26 February 1915, he transferred into the 1st Battalion, Welsh Guards. He died, aged 23, in the Battle of Loos on 27 September 1915. Commemorated on the Loos Memorial, France. 
  • Edward Idris Evans, Sergeant, 49945, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Born 1890. Son of William Evans and Rhoda Martha Evans (nee Davies), of Penygare, Kidwelly. Enlisted at Kidwelly on 3 September 1914 into the 9th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 58 Brigade, 19th Division. Awarded the Military Cross for his bravery in the Ypres area, Belgium. He was wounded during the German Spring Offensive near St. Quentin, France, on 25 March 1918 and was invalided home. While recovering in hospital, a cough he had developed inFrance was found to be tuberculosis. He was discharged from the army on 30 August 1918 and died during the third quarter of 1919 at Kidwelly, aged 29.
  • Oliver Evans, Lance Corporal, 42224, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Son of Mrs L Evans, of Greyhound,Lady Street, Kidwelly. Enlisted at Llanelli into the Welsh Regiment, and later transferred into the 13th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Killed in action inFrance, aged 30, on 22 April 1918. Commemorated on the PozieresMemorial,France.
  • Alexander Gilasbey, Private, 285143, Welsh Regiment. Born in Kidwelly. Husband of Kate Gilasbey, of 5 St Mark's Place,Bath. Enlisted atBath. 10th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 114 Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. Killed in action at Ypres on 4 September 1917, aged 35. Buried at Bard Cottage Cemetery,Belgium.
  • David Gower, Private, 13462, Welsh Regiment. Son of Mr D Gower, Gwendraeth Town, Kidwelly. Enlisted at Llanelli into the 9th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 58 Brigade, 19th (Western) Division. Accidentally killed in the Loos area of France on 23 November 1915, possibly in grenade training.  Buried at Chocques Military Cemetery, France.
  • David Griffiths, Private, 54198, Welsh Regiment. Son of John and Mary Griffiths, of Cwmffynonau, Kidwelly. He enlisted at Carmarthen. 16th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 115 Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. Wounded at Boesinghe, Belgium, and was taken to the Casualty Clearing Station at Proven where he died of wounds on 9 February 1917, aged 20. Buried at Mendinghem Military Cemetery, Belgium.   • William John Griffiths, Private, G/5825, Royal Sussex Regiment. Born at Mynyddygarreg. Enlisted at Llanelli. 9th Battalion, Royal Sussex Regiment, attached to 73 Brigade, 24th Division. Killed in theBattle of Loos on 25 September 1915. Commemorated on the LoosMemorial,France. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial. 
  • David John Howells, Private, 202759, Welsh Regiment. Son of Philip and Eleanor Howells, of Maes Gwenllian, Kidwelly. 18th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 119 Brigade, 40th (Bantam) Division. Taken ill during the final months of the war and moved to the BaseHospital near Boulogne, where he died aged 32 on 31 December 1918. Buried at Terlincthun British Cemetery, France.
  • William Howells, Private, 20096, Welsh Regiment. Born in Kidwelly. Son of Richard and Hannah Howells, later of Arfryn House, Myrtle Hill, Ponthenry. Enlisted at Llanelli into the 15th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, the “Carmarthen Pals” battalion. Trained at Rhyl before landing in France in December 1915 as part of 114 Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. William was wounded during trench training and died at Bethune on 21 March 1916, aged 27. Buried at Bethune Town Cemetery,France. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • Augustus Edward Hugh, Private, 45307, Welsh Regiment. Son of David James and Charlotte Hugh, of Bay View,Station   Road, Kidwelly. Enlisted at Haverfordwest into the 8th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 40 Brigade, 13th (Western) Division. Killed during the advance into Mesopotamia on 14 January 1917, aged 36. Buried at Amara War Cemetery,Iraq.
  • David Hughes, Private, 14762, South Wales Borderers. Son of John and Margaret Hughes, of Kidwelly, and husband of Mary Emily Rise (formerly Hughes), of 20 Bryndulais Row, Seven Sisters. He worked at the Yniscedwen Tinplate Works at Ystalyfera before the war. Enlisted at Ystradgynlais into the 2nd Battalion,South Wales Borderers. David was killed on the Western Front on 6 April 1916, aged 30. Buried atMesnil Ridge Cemetery,France. Brother of Sam and Willie Hughes, below.
  • Samuel Hughes, Private, 12535, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Husband of Beatrice Hughes, of 14 Gwendraeth Taun, Kidwelly. He enlisted at Llanelli into the 8th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, attached to 40 Brigade, 13th (Western) Division. Fell ill in Mesopotamia, came home for treatment and died on 12 March 1918, aged 27. Buried at Kidwelly (St. Mary) Churchyard. His brothers David and Willie also fell.
  • William Henry Hughes, Private, 35648, Machine Gun Corps. Born in Kidwelly. Enlisted at Carmarthen into the Gloucestershire Regiment. Transferred to 5th Battalion, Machine Gun Corps, attached to the 5th Division. Died in theBattle of Vimy on 16 April 1917. Buried atBois-Carre British Cemetery, France.   • William James, Private, 31684, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Eldest son of Mr and Mrs James James, formerly of Upper Mill, but later of Gwendraeth Place, Kidwelly. Enlisted at Llanelli into the 13th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, attached to 113 Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. Killed at theBattle of Pilckem on 31 July 1917. Buried atDragoon Camp Cemetery,Belgium.
  • Sidney Morris Jenkins, Corporal, 139015, Royal Engineers. Son of David and Jane Jenkins, of 24 Water Street, Kidwelly. Enlisted at Llanelli into the Royal Engineers. Served with 180th Tunnelling Company, removing unexploded charges and mines from battlefields. Wounded following the German Offensive of 1918 and died on 23 July 1918, aged 24. Buried at Montigny Communal Cemetery,Somme,France.
  • Thomas John, Company Sergeant Major, 23554, Welsh Regiment. Born in Kidwelly. He was a Police Sergeant in Cardiff before the war, and enlisted there into the 16th Battalion, Welsh Regiment. In December 1914 the battalion moved to ColwynBay, in 130 Brigade, 43rd Division, and the formation later became 115 Brigade, 38th Division. Wounded in battle of Mametz Wood, which began on 7 July 1915, and soon died. Comemmorated on the Thiepval Memorial, France. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • David Gravelle Jones, Private, 10643, South Wales Borderers. Born at Kidwelly. Enlisted at Swansea into the 2nd Battalion, South Wales Borderers. Killed at the Somme on 25 September 1916. Commemorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate)Memorial, Belgium. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • James Richard Tudor Jones, Second Lieutenant, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment. Son of James and Elizabeth Tyson Jones, of Hill House, Kidwelly. 2nd Battalion, Loyal North Lancashire Regiment, attached to 94 Brigade, 31st Division. Killed in Flanders, aged 24, on 23 July 1918. Buried at Raperie British Cemetery, France.
  • Mervyn Jones, Private, 24316, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Son of David and MA Jones, of 33 Lady Street, Kidwelly. Enlisted at Llanelli into the 13th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers.   • Samuel Jones, Lance Corporal, 14660, South Wales Borderers. Born in Kidwelly. Son of David and Margaret Jones, later of 21 Havelock Street, Llanelli. Enlisted at Llanelli into the 5th Battalion, South Wales Borderers, attached to 58 Brigade, 19th (Western) Division. Taken ill, probably with influenza, at the end of the war. Died on 2 December 1918, aged 26. Buried at Doullens Communal Cemetery Extension No. 2,France.
  • Charles Wyndham Lewis, Pioneer, 129892, Royal Engineers. Son of Mr CR Lewis, of 22 Lady Street, Kidwelly. Enlisted at Llanelli into the Royal Welsh Fusiliers, later transferred to the Royal Engineers, 'P' Special Company. The Special Companies were the Gas Warfare, or Chemical Warfare specialists, of the British Army, handling and firing Stokes Mortars. Charles was killed in the Third Battle of the Scarpe on 6 May 1917. Buried at Beaulencourt British Cemetery, France.
  • William Lewis, Able Seaman, J/42916, Royal Navy. Son of John and Margaret Lewis, of Mynyddygarreg, and husband of Catherine E Lewis, of Nantgaredig House, Four Roads, Kidwelly. Served in the Royal Navy, HMS Magic, part of the Eleventh Destroyer Flotilla. Died when his ship struck a German mine and sank on 10 April 1918, Commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial,Devon.
  • William Henry Lewis, Private, 13848, Welsh Regiment. Born inCardiff and lived in Kidwelly before the war. Enlisted at Llanelli into the 2nd Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 3 Brigade, 1st Division. Killed in action on 20 April 1916 at Loos. Buried at St. Patrick's Cemetery, Loos,France. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • Arthur Jesse Lippiat, Private, 18718, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Son of Jesse and Caroline Lippiat, of14   Watercress Road, Ashley Vale,Bristol. Lived in Kidwelly before the war, and enlisted there into the 16th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, attached to 113 Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. Killed at Langemarck on 1 September 1917, aged 21. Buried at Bard Cottage Cemetery, Belgium. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • Griffith Lloyd, Private, 307171, Lancashire Fusiliers. Born in Flint. Son of Pryce and Ellen Lloyd. Enlisted at Kidwelly into the 2/8th Battalion, Lancashire Fusiliers, attached to 197 Brigade, 66th (2ndEast Lancs.) Division. Wounded at theSomme and died, aged 28, on 28 March 1918. Buried at Namps-Au-Val British Cemetery, France. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • William John Lowe, Driver, M2/0/8835, Royal Army Service Corps. Born in Lampeter 1887. Son of William and Sarah Lowe, later of16 Lady Street, Kidwelly. Served with the MT Section of the Army Service Corps as a Driver. Was treated in hospital three times before being pensioned off. Died from his wounds at home on 31 March 1919, aged 32. Buried at Kidwelly (St. Mary) Churchyard.
  • Andrew Wilfred Mansel, Private, Welsh Regiment. Born in 1895. Son of Thomas and Mary Jane Mansel (nee Jones), of 22, Gordon Terrace, Kidwelly. Enlisted into the Pembroke Yeomanry in February 1916, and was on home service throughout the rest of the war. Discharged as medically unfit on 15 August 1917, suffering from pthisis. Died at Kidwelly in the first quarter of 1918, aged 22.
  • Thomas Martin, Private, 48867, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers. Born at Enfield, Middlesex, 1895. By 1911 he was living at Kidwelly, where he worked as a farm labourer for Thomas Jones, of Forestfach, Kidwelly. Served in France with the 2nd Welsh from 27 December 1914, later transferred to the 6th Battalion, Royal Inniskilling Fusiliers, attached to 151 Brigade, 50th (Northumbrian) Division. Killed in the last days of the war, on 7 November 1918,
    aged 24. Buried at Dourlers Communal Cemetery Extension, France. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial. 
  • Thomas Miles, Private, 27433, Royal Defence Corps. Born at Carmarthen in 1862. Son of Moses and Margaret Miles. By 1891 he was working at Cardiff. By 1901 was lodging with the Bish family,Merthyr Tydfil. Later worked a coal hewer at Kidwelly, then at Pembrey Munitions Works. Enlisted into the Welsh Regiment at Merthyr on 17 December 1915. Joined the North Staffordshire Regiment in April 1916, posted to Guernsey in November 1916, where the battalion became the 17th Battalion, Royal Defence Corps. He remained on Guernsey for the rest of the war, discharged on 14 December 1918, when his address was Tymawr, Water Street, Kidwelly. Died at Kidwelly in late 1919, aged 57.
  • David John Morgan, Private, 12532, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Born in Kidwelly. Enlisted at Llanelli into the 8th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, attached to 40 Brigade, 13th (Western) Division. Wounded at Gallipoli and transferred to a hospital ship waiting offshore. Died of wounds aboard the ship on 30 October 1915 and buried at sea. Commemorated on the Helles Memorial, Gallipoli.
  • Morgan Morgan, Private, 13565, Welsh Regiment. Born in Kidwelly. Enlisted at Llanelli into the 9th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 58 Brigade, 19th (Western) Division. Killed in the Battle of Loos on 25 September, 1915, charging across No Man’s Land in the face of German machine guns. John Tucker, also of Kidwelly, died in the same charge, in which four Kidwelly men (Tom Lewis, Volin Jones, Sid Buist and Charlie Peck) were wounded. Morgan is commemorated on the Loos Memorial.
  • William John Morgans, Private, 53503, Welsh Regiment. Born in Kidwelly. Enlisted at Llanelli into the Pembroke Yeomanry. Transferred to 14th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 114 Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. Wounded in theArmentieres area and died on 11 November 1917. Buried at Estaires Communal CemeteryExtension,France.
  • John Elias Morris, Private, 80265, Welsh Regiment. Son of David and Mary Morris, of "Bryn Golen," Waun-y-clyn, Trimsaran. Lived in Kidwelly before the war. Enlisted at Carmarthen into the 14th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 114 Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. Died of wounds on 10 November 1918, aged 19. Buried at Caudry British Cemetery, France. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • David Henry Parry, Master, Mercantile Marine. Born at Kidwelly. Served in the Mercantile Marine as Master of the SS Jose de Larnnaga. David died, aged 50, when his ship was sunk by a German U-boat on 28 April 1917. Commemorated on the Tower Hill Memorial, London. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • Joseph Parry, Private, 15270, Welsh Regiment. Born in Bedwellty, near Tredegar. Husband of Margaret Parry, of61 Priory Street, Kidwelly. Had served in the South African War of 1899-1901. Re-enlisted at Carmarthen into the Welsh Regiment in 1914. Served with the Depot Battalion, stationed in the UK. Died of sickness on 22 September 1918, aged 47. Buried at Kidwelly (St. Mary) Churchyard.
  • Frank Picot, Private, 1536, Australian Infantry. Son of the Reverend James Picot and Annie Le Brocq Picot, of King's Road,St. PetersPort,Guernsey. Born in Kidwelly, later moved to Guernsey then Australia, where he worked as a farmer in Queensland. Enlisted at Queensland on 14 December 1914. Posted to the 15th Battalion, Australian Imperial Force,  attached to 4 Brigade, 1st ANZAC Division. Evacuated from Gallipoli with gunshot wound to his thigh and died at the Army Hospital inAlexandria on 8 June 1916, aged 21. Buried at Alexandria (Chatby) Military Cemetery,Egypt. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • Thomas George Roberts, Private, 13540, Welsh Regiment. Known as George. Born in Pembroke. Lived in Kidwelly before the war, working as a groom for Colonel Young. Enlisted at Llanelli into the 9th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 58 Brigade, 19th (Western) Division. Killed at Messines on 23 July 1917. Buried at Locre Hospice Cemetery, Belgium. 
  • William John Roberts, Private, 35126, South Wales Borderers. Born in Pembroke. Lived in Kidwelly before the war. Enlisted at Llanelli into the 12th Battalion, South Wales Borderers, attached to 119 Brigade, 40th (Bantam) Division. Killed on 4 May 1917 in the Hindenburg Line area.   • William Leslie Shenton, Acting Sergeant, 18731, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Born in Luton. Enlisted at Kidwelly into the 16th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, attached to 113 Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. Killed at Pilckem Ridge on 31 July 1917. Comemmorated on the Ypres (Menin Gate) Memorial. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.

  • James Frederick Stokes, Private, 267163, Welsh Regiment. Born in Smethwick, near Birmingham. Lived in Kidwelly before the war. Enlisted at Llanelli into the 1/6th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, Pioneers to the 1st Division. James was killed inFlanders on 2 July 1917. Buried at Ramscappelle Road Military Cemetery,Belgium.
  • Archie Styles, Private, 45031, Welsh Regiment. Son of Charles and Emily Styles, of Old Shop, Mynydd y Garreg, Kidwelly. Family later moved to Crawley Down, Sussex. Archie enlisted at Shoreditch. Joined the 14th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 114 Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. Died of wounds on 4 May 1918, aged 21. Buried at Harponville Communal Cemetery, France.
  • Stephen Sullivan, Private, 15773, Welsh Regiment. Son of Margaret Sullivan, of Neath. Enlisted at Llanelli into the 10th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 114 Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. Killed in action at Ypres on 30 March 1917, aged 24. Buried at Bard Cottage Cemetery, Belgium.
  • John Tucker, Private, 13406, Welsh Regiment. Born in Kidwelly, and enlisted there into the 9th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 58 Brigade, 19th (Western) Division. Killed at the Battle of Loos on 25 September 1915, alongside his friend Morgan Morgan of Kidwelly (above). Buried at Brown's Road Military Cemetery, Festubert, France.
  • Edwin Vaughan, Private, 33694, South Wales Borderers. Born in Kidwelly. 4th Battalion, South Wales Borderers, attached to 40 Brigade, 13th (Western) Division. Killed in the Battle of Band-i-Adhaim on 30 April 1917. Comemmorated on Basra Memorial, Iraq. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • Albert Edward Ward, Private, 235597, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Born in Kidwelly. Son of Sarah Ann Ward, of The Cottage, Pontarddulais. Husband of Florence Williams (formerly Ward), of 3 Upper Lime Street, Gorseinon. Enlisted at Gorseinon into the South Wales Borderers. Transferred into the 17th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, attached to 113 Brigade, 38th (Welsh) Division. Killed in the Battle of the Sambre on 4 November 1918, aged 33. Buried at Englefontaine British Cemetery, France. His gravestone is inscribed: 'From his three children'. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • Ernest Wild, Private, 108756, Machine Gun Corps. Son of Mr and Mrs Thomas Wild, of Angel House, Kidwelly. Enlisted at Carmarthen into the Monmouth Regiment. Transferred into the 33rd Company, Machine Gun Corps, attached to the 11th (Northern) Division. Killed in action in Flanders on 13 April 1918, aged 22. Comemmorated on the Ploegsteert Memorial, Belgium.
  • Norman Hadley Williams, Private, 3211, Welsh Guards. Born in Cradley, Staffordshire. Enlisted at Kidwelly into the 1st Battalion, Welsh Guards. Killed in the Battle of the Pilckem Ridge on 5 August 1918. Buried atArtillery   Wood Cemetery,Belgium.

  • Reginald Arthur Anstee, D.C.M., Sergeant, 2031345, Royal Welch Fusiliers. Son of Arthur and Olive May Anstee. Husband of Ethel Annie Anstee, of Hull. 7th Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers, attached to the 53rd (Welsh) Division. Killed on 28 March 1945, aged 29. Buried at Reichswald Forest War Cemetery,Germany. Posthumously awarded the Distinguished Conduct Medal.
  • John Thomas Collins, Lance Sergeant, 4198756, Royal Welch Fusiliers. Son of Alfred and Janet Collins, of Kidwelly. Served with the 4th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers. Killed in action in the Bocage area of France on 13 August 1944, aged 27. Buried at Brouay   War Cemetery, France. 
  • Delwyn Davies, Marine, PLY/X. 108897, Royal Marines. Son of Bertie and Olive Davies, of Llansaint. On the night of 25 April 1943, Delwyn was aboard one of a pair of Landing Craft Gun vessels being delivered from the Harland & Wolff shipyard in Belfast to Falmouth. There were 79 Royal Marines and sailors on board. The vessels were denied shelter from a gale at Fishguard Harbour, and made for Milford Haven. After rounding St Ann's Head, both landing craft sank and bodies were washed ashore in Freshwater Bay. More information is available on our page about the site of the tragedy.
  • David Daniel Evans, Private, 5392452, Oxford and Bucks Light Infantry. Son of Ivor and Ada Evans, of Kidwelly. Served with the 7th Battalion, Oxfordshire and Buckinghamshire Light Infantry, attached to 167 Infantry Brigade. The Battalion entered Tunis on 7 May 1943 after the Battles of El Alamein defeated the German Afrika Korps. David was killed on 9 May 1943, aged 29. Buried at Enfidaville War Cemetery, Tunisia. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • Richard Lewis Evans, Fusilier, 4197438, Royal Welch Fusiliers. Son of James and Hannah Evans, of Kidwelly. 1st Battalion, Royal Welch Fusiliers. Burma. Killed in battle near Kohima, Burma, on 5 May 1944, aged 26. Buried at Kohima War Cemetery. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • Alec Gravelle, Leading Aircraftman, 1869547, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Son of Llewelyn and Mary Ann Gravell, of Kidwelly. Served with 148 Squadron, RAFVR, based at Foggia, Italy, after the Allied invasion. Alec died on 9 July 1945, aged 20. Buried at Bari War Cemetery, Italy.
  • Kenneth Hawkins, Private, 5193672, York & Lancaster Regiment. Son of Charles and Mary E Hawkins, of Kidwelly. 6th Battalion, York &Lancaster Regiment. Killed in Italy on 10 September 1943, aged 20. Buried at Salerno   War Cemetery, Italy.
  • David Andrew Hudson, Able Seaman, D/JX 154807, Royal Navy. Son of Thomas and Mary Ann Hudson, of Kidwelly, and served aboard the Town-class Cruiser HMS Gloucester. On 22 May 1941, while north of Crete, the ship was attacked by German dive bombers and sank with the loss of 723 lives. Only 82 crew members survived. David was killed that day, aged 18. Commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
  • Robert Glyn John, Ordinary Seaman, D/JX 167980, Royal Navy. Son of Robert Daniel John and Ida Agnes John, of Kidwelly. Served aboard H-class Destroyer HMS Hunter. Died aged 21 when his ship sank during a naval battle in Norway on 10 April 1940.  Comemmorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial, Devon.
  • Alfred Ivor Johns, Sergeant (Air Bomber), 1837104, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Son of George and Margaret Ann Johns, husband of Megan Johns, of BurryPort. Served with 102 Squadron, RAFVR. Died on the night of 5 January 1945, aged 31, when his Halifax bomber was shot down overGermany during a raid. Buried at Hanover War Cemetery,Germany.
  • Sidney John, civilian, Air Raid Precaution. Husband of Margaret Annie John, of 2 Monksford Street, Pwll, Kidwelly. Killed in Llanelli during a German air raid on 23 January 1943, aged 47. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • Adolph Frederick Jones, Guardsman, 2737008, Welsh Guards. Son of Thomas and Sarah Jones, of Kidwelly. Served with 3rd Battalion, Welsh Guards. Killed on 2 October 1944, aged 31. Buried at Santerno Valley War Cemetery,Italy. Not named on Kidwelly war memorial.
  • John Dudley Jones, Lance Corporal, 4209253, Royal Welch Fusiliers. Son of Hannah Jane Jones, of Minyrafon, Llansaint. Served with the 7th Battalion, Royal Welsh Fusiliers, attached to 158th Infantry Brigade, 53rd (Welsh) Division. Killed inGermany on 15 April 1945, aged 23. Buried in Becklingen War Cemetery,Germany.
  • Thomas King, Ordinary Seaman, P/JX. 253120, Royal Navy.  Died at home on 4 April 1942. Buried at Burry Port Cemetery.
  • Arthur Hugh Wilson Lewis, Private, 14627373, Black Watch (Royal Highlanders). 6th Battalion, Black Watch, Killed on 8 June 1944, aged 19, while taking part in the Allied invasion o fItaly. Buried at Bolsena War Cemetery, Italy.
  • Owen Thomas Dunne Locke, Marine, PLY/X 101541, Royal Marines. Son of William James Locke and Margaret Susan Locke, of Kidwelly. Served aboard HMS Repulse, which was sunk by Japanese bombing in December 1941, soon after war broke out in the Pacific. Owen was among the survivors who were rescued and taken toSingapore. He died of wounds on 22 February, 1942, aged 28. Comemmorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial,Devon.
  • Thomas James Rogers, Sergeant (Air Gunner), 1852120, Royal Air Force Volunteer Reserve. Born 1915. Son of Thomas Rogers and Mary Rogers, of Kidwelly. Served with 424 (RCAF) Squadron, RAFVR. Killed on 31 march 1944 when his Halifax bomber was shot down after a raid over Nuremberg. Buried at Hanover War Cemetery, Germany. 
  • Thomas Hector Rogers, Private, 14716877, Welch Regiment. Son of John and Sarah Ann Rogers, of Llansaint. 1/5th Battalion, Welsh Regiment, attached to 158th Infantry Brigade, 53rd (Welsh) Division. Killed, aged 18, in heavy fighting in Netersel, Netherlands, on 24 September 1944. Buried in Bergen-Op-Zoom War Cemetery, Netherlands.
  • Trevor Rogers, Able Seaman, D/JX 178503, Royal Navy. Born 1919. Son of Thomas and Mary Rogers, of Kidwelly. Served aboard the Arethusa-class Light Cruiser HMS Galatea. On the night of 14 December 1941, the ship was torpedoed and sunk by a U-boat off Alexandria, Egypt. Trevor died that night, aged 21. The ship’s captain, 22 officers and 447 ratings were killed. He is commemorated on the Plymouth Naval Memorial,Devon.
  • Leslie Walters, Sapper, 1905896, Royal Engineers. Son of William and Elizabeth Walters, of Kidwelly. Husband of Pat Walters. Served with 11th Field Company, Royal Engineers, as part of the invasion force that landed at Normandy in June 1944. Leslie died, aged 26, during the advance through the Netherlands on 19 September 1944. Buried at Bergen-Op-Zoom   War Cemetery, Netherlands.
  • Samuel Vernon Wickland, Flight Sergeant, 640170, Royal Air Force. Born at Llansaint 1921. Son of Joseph James Wickland and Elizabeth Jane Wickland (nee Samuel). Married Ivy Gamble, of Greenwich, London, in 1942. Served as an Air Gunner with 61 Squadron. Died, aged 23, on the night of 23 September 1944, when his Lancaster ED470 bomber was shot down at Wechte, near Tecklenburg, Germany. Samuel was one of six of her crew killed in the crash; there was only one survivor. Buried in Reichswald Forest War Cemetery, Germany.
  • Thomas Edwin Jones Williams, Private 14739353. Served with 4th Bn, Welsh Regiment. Died 7 March 1945, aged 19, during an attack on the Rhineland area of Germany. Son of Mrs A Williams of 51 Lady Street, Kidwelly.
