Denbigh war memorial

Denbigh war memorial

This memorial commemorates the people from Denbigh and the outlying rural area who died in the First and Second World Wars. It was created by sculptor Charles Leonard Hartwell and unveiled in 1923.

Initially it occupied a more central position in Crown Square. To make space for it, the old High Cross was moved elsewhere – it can now be seen near Lenten Pool.

The memorial superseded a “shrine” in honour of the war dead which was unveiled on the recently completed town hall in December 1917 (while the war was still being fought).

The memorial consists of a pedestal on which stands a life-size bronze of a figure known as Winged Peace. It holds the “Wreath of Glory” in its right hand.
