Ruabon war memorial

Ruabon war memorial

The lychgate at St Mary’s Church was built in 1920 as a memorial to the local men who died in the First World War. The names of the Second World War dead were added later. To discover who they were, choose one of the following categories:

First World War

Second World War

Among those named on the memorial is Charles Taylor, son of the headmaster of Ruabon Grammar School. He played rugby for Wales nine times during the early part of his Royal Navy career. He died in a naval battle in 1915.

Inside the churchyard, close to the lychgate, stands an obelisk in memory of the alumni of Lindisfarne College, Essex, who died in the wars. The college moved to Wynnstay Hall, near Ruabon, after the Second World War. The war memorial was moved to the churchyard after the college’s closure in the 1990s.
