Penmachno war memorial

Penmachno war memorial

This memorial is beside the boundary wall of St Tudclud’s churchyard. One of the men named on it is buried in the churchyard.

The original inscription reads: “Er Gogoniant Duw. Teyrnged plwyf Penmachno i’w meibion a gollwyd yn y rhyfel 1914-1918.” This translates as: “For the glory of God. Penmachno parish’s tribute to its sons lost in the war 1914-18.” The dates 1939-1945 were latter added beneath.

Above the names of the men who died in the Second World War is the inscription: “Duw wyr werth eich aberth chi.” This employs the Welsh poetic device of cynghanedd (formalised alliteration). It translates as: “God knows the value of your sacrifice”.
