The village of Capel Curig is named after the small church which was originally dedicated to St Curig, a 6th-century saint. The village’s name means Curig’s Chapel.

Dolwyddelan, in the next valley to the south, is named after Gwyddelan, a holy man who came to Wales from Ireland in the 5th century. “Gwyddel” is Welsh for Irishman, and the “an” suffix indicates that he was small in stature. The “Dol” prefix means “meadow”.
