Tours in Powys

Brecon (Powys) in World War 1

As a town with a long history as a military base, Brecon was bound to be heavily affected by the First World War. The conflict had many implications for civilian life too. One chapel lost its organist, and the rugby club lost one of its former players – a member of the first ever Wales team. On the plus side, Christ College gained a new French master – a professor who had fled from his Belgian university as the Germans invaded.

Women also played their parts. One was rewarded for her work as a ‘Land Girl’. One mother provided catering for wounded soldiers’ events and lost her son in 1918 – but was fined after the war for selling salmon above the wartime controlled price.

Take our self-guided trail around the town to discover the many ways in which Brecon was changed by the war.

Llandrindod Wells (Powys) in World War 1

Life in Llandrindod Wells was transformed in the First World War, when the usual influx of tourists suddenly stopped and hotels became billets for thousands of Royal Army Medical Corps men and officers. Some of the spa facilities, developed for health tourism, made ideal hospitals for wounded or rheumatic soldiers.

The town welcomed refugees from occupied Belgium and raised funds to aid soldiers and war horses. The temporary residents engaged in musical, theatrical and sporting entertainment, sometimes sharing platforms with locals.

Army deserters were taken to courts martial in the town, and a tribunal decided whether local men – including conscientious objectors – should be exempted from military service. As the war ground on, more and more men left their homes and workplaces in Llandrindod to serve, and more and more were reported wounded or killed. Some families lost more than one person.

Talgarth (Powys) in World War 1

The First World War took a heavy toll on Talgarth, where the local war memorial lists 25 men who died. Two days after war broke out, a meeting was held at the town hall to encourage local men to enlist. About 20 young men rushed forward to give their names.

By 1915 the school headmaster’s roll of honour listed 95 of his past pupils who were serving in the war. Two men who were known and respected locally as preachers were killed. One had been rejected by the army several times because of a childhood leg injury but he eventually got his way, and was killed only a week or so after reaching the Western Front.

Talgarth’s postman was quick to enlist. His bravery on the field was rewarded with the Military Medal but he died in 1917. Side by side in Talgarth’s churchyard are the war graves of a brother and sister.

Now you can discover how the war affected Talgarth by following our self-guided trail. Simply scan the QR codes with your smartphone at any of the featured places to start.
