This memorial was erected in honour of the local people who died on active service in the First World War. The names of the Second World War dead were later added, on the block above the FWW names.

An inscription on the memorial dedicates the monument and the adjacent park to the men who fought in the Great War of 1914-1918. Each panel of names is prefaced with: “Mewn angof ni chânt fod.” This means: “They shall not be forgotten.”

Lived at 9 Porkington Terrace, Barmouth, before emigrating to Canada c.1906, then to Australia shortly before war broke out, where he held an appointment at Rockampton, Queensland. Wounded in the back at Gallipoli in 1915.

He was a Sergeant Instructor. In June 1917 he sailed to German East Africa to “instruct the Coloured Troops”. His brother William also served. Another address for the family was Harborough House.
