In memory of Edmund Maurice Buckley

newtown_edmund_m_buckleyEdmund Maurice Buckley was born in Newtown. He was the only son of Sir Edmund and Lady Buckley. Their many addresses included: Plas Dinas, in Dinas Mawddwy: Milford Hall, near Newtown; Aberturnant Hall, near Bala; and Grotton Hall, Saddleworth, near Manchester.

He was educated at Cheltenham College and graduated in engineering at Owen’s University in Manchester. He worked for the Humber motor vehicle company, latterly in Coventry. He was a keen rugby player.

He left Coventry soon after the war began and joined the Public Schools Battalion. He received a commission in the 7th Royal Welsh Fusiliers in November 1914. He was put in charge of a platoon which included 32 men from Barmouth.

In August 1915, his unit took part in the attempted invasion of Turkey, which had begun in April 1915. The plan to establish a foothold in the Gallipoli peninsula failed, and many Allied lives were lost before the retreat in January 1916.

Edmund was wounded at Gallipoli on 10 August 1915. He was taken to the troop transport ship Clan MacGillivray but died of his wounds on 12 August, aged 29. He was buried at the Lancashire Landing Cemetery.
