Dock of 7 years' labour

An unusual section of the Wales Coast Path runs alongside a large rectangular lake in Cardiff, and now walkers can scan HistoryPoints QR codes to discover that this was the Bute East Dock - which took hundreds of men seven years to ...

excavate and build. The 1850s project was so ambitious that the dock was opened in two halves. Facilities included high-level railway tracks where coal from Valleys collieries could be tipped directly into ships' holds. Our web page about the dock includes aerial photos, one of which shows that the dock was even bigger than today's lake - the southern end was filled in during land reclamation works.
