Dinas Powys WREN remembered

Teenager Mary Cooke worked for a fur coat company, sometimes modelling coats, before the Second World War shattered her family's happiness. One night a bomb dropped near the family's garden in Dinas Powys, wrecking the ...

house windows. Mary joined the Women's Royal Naval Service, becoming a Writer at a barracks in Kent, where she was known as "Cookie". She enjoyed dancing and films in her time off, but eventually contracted tuberculosis and died at home, aged 23. You can now see pictures of Mary and read her story by scanning the HistoryPoints QR codes near Dinas Powys war memorial (they're on the information board) with your smartphone, then clicking on the soldier icon beside Mary's entry in the SWW list - or by clicking here.
