The Ship on Launch may seem an odd name for a pub near Cardiff Arms Park, a long way from the docks. But ...

once upon a time Cardiff's harbour was in the vicinity of Westgate Street, before the river Taff was diverted and much bigger docking facilities were built further south. This also explains the name for landlocked Quay Street, where the pub's located.
