Le memorial de la guerre de Chirk
Ce mémorial a été créé par le sculpteur et calligraphe Eric Gill et inauguré en octobre 1920. Il honore le souvenir des autochtones morts aux Première et Seconde Guerres Mondiales. Pour consulter les informations les concernant, choisissez une catégorie :
Ce monument comporte un bas-relief sculpté qui représente un soldat, le dos courbé, avec la capote remontée jusqu’aux oreilles et son casque de métal. Son fusil repose à terre et il lève la main gauche comme pour dire : « Arrêtez ».
L’inscription en gallois dit ceci : « Er ardderchog goffa am wyr Y Waen a roes eu heinioes yn achos eu gwlad yn y Rhyfel Mawr 1914-1919 y gosodwyd y maen hwn gan eu cydblwyfolion ». Ce qui se traduit par : « En souvenir glorieux des hommes de Chirk qui ont donné leur vie pour leur patrie à la Grande Guerre de 1914-1919. Ce monument a été érigé par leurs amis paroissiens ». Alors qu’on a déclaré la paix en novembre 1918, le Traité de Versailles (qui mettait officiellement fin à la guerre) a été signé en juin 1919.
C’est Lord Howard de Walden (Thomas Evelyn Scott-Ellis), de Chirk Castle, qui a fait la commande de ce mémorial. C’était l’un des hommes les plus riches de Grande-Bretagne, auteur dramatique et protecteur de nombreux grands artistes de l’époque, parmi lesquels Dylan Thomas. Il avait combattu dans les guerres Sud- Africaines et, à la Première Guerre Mondiale, avec les Royal Welsh Fusiliers à Gallipoli et en France.
C’est peut-être pour ses caractères, parmi lesquels Gill Sans et Perpetua qu’Eric Gill (1882-1940) est le plus célèbre. Il a commencé sa formation d’architecte dans une étude largement spécialisée dans les églises avant de s’installer comme marbrier et calligraphe. En ce qui concerne le mémorial de la guerre de Chirk, le sommet (qui ressemble à deux toits qui se coupent en formant une croix) est bien plus typique, en sa forme, de l’architecture d’une église que de celle d’un obélisque, qui, normalement, aurait un sommet pyramidal. De 1924 à 1928, Gill a vécu à Capel-y-Ffin, entre Abergavenny et Hay-on-Wye.
