Frederick’s ship, an anti-submarine trawler, was one of several loaned by the Royal Navy to stem losses of merchant shipping after the attack on Pearl Harbor brought the USA  into the war. HMT Bedfordshire was sunk by a German U-boat near North Carolina in May 1942.
