Here lies Gicianto Ferrari

Grave stone of Gicanto Ferrari

Gicianto Ferrari (1847-1923)

Signor Ferrari died aged 76 in the Llandudno Cottage Hospital. He was best known as “The Bird Man of Llandudno”. A native of Genoa, Italy, he had lived in the town for 43 years.

His unique show featured performing canaries that he had trained himself. It was a regular feature on the promenade, delighting adults and children.

He started out as Llandudno’s first ice-cream vendor. He had a stall in the market hall and later a shop in Somerset Street. During the winter he would take his birds to give shows in South Wales and other parts of the country.

The photo on the left shows the carved birds on his tombstone. The photo below shows him performing one of his tricks - firing a gun while his unflappable birds perch on the barrel.
