In memory of John Thomas Jones
John Thomas Jones worked at Oakeley Slate Quarries, Blaenau Ffestiniog. His parents were Mr and Mrs Griffith Jones of 15 Cwmorthin Road, Tanygrisiau.
John was an army reservist and was called up at the start of the First World War. He fought with the 1st Battalion of the Royal Welsh Fusiliers in many of the early battles. He sent many letters to his parents, and others for publication in a local newspaper called Y Glorian.
In September 1915 he was wounded in the chest. In the heat of battle, he chose to press on instead of returning for treatment. Soon he sustained a back wound, which was to prove fatal.
He died at a field hospital on 30 September 1915, aged 36. He is buried at Merville Communal Cemetery, in the Nord region of France. He had been due to go home on leave in autumn 1915.
Two of his brothers also served in the army in the war.
