In memory of William Williams
William Williams was born to Edward and Mary Williams. Edward worked in the Penmaenmawr quarries. William had four siblings: Vera, Harold, Rhoda and Evelyn. The family lived at 20 Bell Cottages, Penmaenmawr.
After his schooling in Penmaenmawr, William got a job collecting eggs from farms in the district.
During the Second World War, he enlisted in the army, serving as a Private in the 10th Battalion of the Gloucestershire Regiment. In the later part of the war, the battalion took part in the Allied forces’ Burma campaign, a protracted assault which eventually forced the Japanese out of key areas of Myanmar (then known as Burma).
William died in the Mandalay area on 13 February 1945, as the Allies began a battle to oust Japanese forces from the city of Mandalay. He was 24 years old. He has no known grave and is commemorated on the Rangoon Memorial.
With thanks to Nora Williams, William’s niece
