Mostyn Family Vault

Mostyn family vaults

These vaults are the last resting places of the lords of the manor of the Gloddaeth, Bodysgallen, Penrhyn and Marl families. There are numerous memorial tablets to these lords and ladies.

The most important for Llandudno was Lady Henrietta Augusta Mostyn, daughter of William the 4th Earl of Abergavenny (see painting below).

Born in 1830, she died at Gloddaeth in 1912. She was married to Thomas Edward Lloyd Mostyn MP and, as the owner of most of the land in Llandudno, she ruled the roost. She was intimately concerned with the way the new resort of Llandudno was developed and she also was a public benefactress.

Holy Trinity Church, Oriel Mostyn, the town’s original library and St Paul’s Church were built, in part, by her generosity. She gave the Happy Valley to the town as a recreation area and paid for the Queen Victoria Jubilee commemoration drinking fountain, which is still a prominent landmark in the Happy Valley.
