  • Widdicombe, Roy Wilber Charles, 21, 17th February 1941, Merchant Navy, MV Siamese Prince (London), Sailor, of Lewis Street. Tower Hill Memorial. Roy Widdicombe was one of only two survivors from SS Anglo Saxon which was sunk by a German raider. He and Newport man Robert Tapscott spent 70 days drifting at sea in a jolly boat from SS Anglo Saxon until it beached in the Bahamas, having covered a distance of 3,660km (2275 miles). After recovering, he was returning to the UK when the Siamese Prince was torpedoed and he lost his life.
