Wrexham grave of Thomas Lloyd
Thomas Lloyd, d.1734
The Reverend Thomas Lloyd lived at Plas Power, west of Wrexham, and was connected to Chirk Castle.
The Plas Power estate was named after Irish aristocrat Sir Henry Power, who owned land in the Bersham area in the early 17th century. The estate grew to encompass lands in various parts of North Wales, Lancashire and Shropshire.
Thomas Lloyd was the tenant of Plas Power from 1720 until his death, aged 63. His mother was Elizabeth Myddelton of Plas Cadwgan, a medieval hall south of Plas Power. She was related to the Myddeltons of Chirk Castle, now a National Trust property. Thomas acted as a trusted agent for the Myddelton family.
He was a tutor at the castle when it was the seat of Sir Richard Myddelton, who created many of the lavish interiors you can see in the castle today. Thomas was also chaplain to Mary, one of Sir Richard’s daughters. She bought Plas Power in 1733 and bequeathed the property to Thomas’ son William, who had succeeded Thomas as tenant of Plas Power. You can see her memorial inside St Giles’ Church.
Thomas was 63 when he died. Also buried here is his wife Elizabeth, who came from the wealthy Leche family of Cheshire. She died in 1746, aged 70.
