Le cenotaphe de Holyhead
Ce monument commémoratif a été inauguré en septembre 1923 et rend hommage aux autochtones morts à la Première Guerre Mondiale. La dédicace prend acte du fait qu’il a été bâti par les habitants de Holyhead. Le nom de ceux qui sont tombés lors de conflits ultérieurs a été ajouté par la suite. Parmi ceux dont le nom figure sur ce mémorial se trouve John Fox Russell, du Royal Army Medical Corps, à qui on a décerné la Victoria Cross—la plus haute décoration pour bravoure—pour son dévouement à aider les blessés pendant les combats en Palestine. Sa famille habitait dans le bâtiment proche du cénotaphe (à présent les bureaux de TR Evans, Hughes & Co). Il a été construit en 1770 environ, et était l’Eagle and Child Inn, devenu plus tard le Royal Hotel.

Was serving on board Barge A.198 at St Omer, France, when he fell overboard to his death after going on deck for a morning wash.

- William Jones, Able Seaman, 194073, RN, HMS Monmouth, a County Class Armoured Cruiser. Lost, aged 35, on 1 November 1914 when the ship was sunk during a battle off Chile. Plymouth Naval Memorial. Adopted son of Owen Jones and Mrs E Jones of 2 Treaddur Square, Holyhead. Joined the Navy in 1889 and extended his service in 1911.
- Robert William Lyons, Cook, 345823, RN, HMS Goliath. Lost, aged 30, on 13 May 1915 when the ship was sunk during the Dardanelles Campaign. Plymouth Naval Memorial. Born in Greenwich. Son of Robert and Sophia Lyons of London. Husband of Elizabeth Margaret Lyons of 12 Summer Hill, Holyhead.
- Joseph Augustine Morris, Private, CH/4649, RMLI, RMR/A/578 HMS Revenge. Accidentally drowned, aged 42, on 25 November 1914 while his ship was in Dover Harbour. He had completed 23 years service. St James Cemetery, Dover, Kent. Son of Lewis and Agnes Morris of Holyhead. Resided at Blenheim Cottage, London Road, Holyhead with sister Agnes.
- Thomas Griffiths Nicholas, Telegraphist, Mersey Z/2611, RNVR, SS Dowlais (Cardiff), 3016 tons. Lost, aged 19, on 03 December 1917. Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of Thomas and Elizabeth Nicholas of 17 Cambria Street, Holyhead.
- William Henry Parry, Stoker 2nd Class, K/44803, RNR, HMS Challenger. Died in South Africa of illness on 15 May 1918, aged 33. Simond’s Town (Dido) Cemetery. Born in Bangor. Lived at Hadley Villa, Holyhead. Husband of Ellen Jane Parry, Tynyryogol, Burwen, Amlwch.
- Richard Edward Pierce, Seaman, 1684D, RNR, HMS Carmania. Died of wounds, aged 40, on 16 September 1914 when his ship, a Cunard liner converted into an armed merchant cruiser, was attacked near Bermuda. Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Born in Amlwch. Son of George and Miriam Pierce of South Stack Lighthouse, Holyhead. Husband of Sarah Pierce (nee Davies) of 40 Vulcan Street, Holyhead, and father of their five children. Worked for 23 years before the war as a sailor with the LNWR.
- Robert Pritchard, Stoker, 1887U, RNR, HMS Bulwark. Died, aged 35, on 26 November 1914 as the result of an explosion. Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Son of Ellen Pritchard of 35 Rock Street, Holyhead. Had worked for many years as a stoker for the LNWR.
- Edward Roberts, Stoker, 1318U, RNR, HMS Europa. Died of illness, aged 46, on 09 September 1916. Malta (Cappucini) Naval Cemetery. Born in Holyhead. Husband of Hannah Roberts of 14 Baker Street. Also lived at 7 Baker Street.
- John Roberts, Deck Hand, 10956DA, RNR, HM Trawler Merse. Died, aged 21, on 22 May 1917. Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Son of Hugh and Mary Roberts of Picton House, 2 Baron Hill, Newborough, Anglesey. In 1901 the family lived at 24 Gilbert Street, Holyhead. In 1911 the family lived at Pen Llyn, Newborough.
- Richard Roberts, Trimmer, 5818TS, RNR, HM Trawler Merse. Died, aged, 37, on 22 May 1917. Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Husband of Catherine Roberts of 5 Baker Street, Holyhead, with whom he had six children.
- Richard Thomas, Stoker, 963U, RNR, HMS Queen Mary. Died, aged 46, on 31 May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland. Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Husband of Margaret Thomas of 57 London Road, Holyhead. Also lived at 21 Queen's Park, Holyhead. His son, also named Richard Thomas, died when HMHS Anglia was lost on 17 November 1915.
- Hugh Walsh, Boy, 1st Class, J/34923, RN, HMS Indefatigable. Died, aged 17, on 31 May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland. Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Son of John and Mary Jane Walsh of Holyhead. Lived at 17 Boston Street, Holyhead in 1901. Joined the Navy on his 16th birthday, after working as a boiler scraper. He joined HMS Indefatigable from the training ship HMS Powerful on 14 May 1916, 16 days before the Battle of Jutland.
- John Wathen, Stoker, 1195V, RNR, HMS Bulwark. Died, aged 48, on 26 November 1914. Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Son of Margaret Wathren of 13 Ucheldre Avenue, Holyhead. Also lived at 13 Mill Street, Holyhead. Popularly known as "Warren", he had previously worked for the LNWR for 20 years.
- Benjamin Weatherall, Mechanician, 301256, RN, HMS Natal. Died, age 37, on 30 December 1915 as a result of an internal explosion in the Cromarty Firth, Scotland. Rosskeen Parish Churchyard Extension Burial Ground. Son of James and Sarah A Weatherall at 87 Aquaduct Street, Emmanuel, Lancashire. At Holyhead in 1908 he married Jane Carter. They had two sons, both born in Holyhead. Previously worked as a furnace stoker, probably in a cotton mill.
- Henry Williams, Stoker, 2755S, RNR, HMS Invincible. Died, aged 25, on 31 May 1916 at the Battle of Jutland. Portsmouth Naval Memorial. Son of Henry and Margaret Williams; brother of Mary Lynch of 29 Cambria Street, Holyhead. Mobilised in August 1914 while working as a stoker for the LNWR.
- Nathaniel Williams, Stoker, 344/V, RNR, HMS Dreel Castle. Died of injuries, aged 42, on 16 November 1916 at the Royal Cornwall Sailors Home Hospital. A steel hawser had snapped and swept him off his feet, fracturing his skull. Holyhead (Maeshyfryd) Burial Board Cemetery. Son of Nathaniel Williams; husband of Catherine Ellen Williams (nee Chambers) of 27 Rock Street, Holyhead. They had two daughters, Sophia and Elizabeth Eunice.
- Owen Wynne Williams, Officer’s Steward 2nd Class, L/8088, RN, HMS Vanguard. Died, aged 22, on 9 July 1917 as a result of an internal explosion while the ship was anchored at the Fleet Base in Scapa Flow, Orkney. Chatham Naval Memorial. Son, possibly adopted, of Mrs Kate Jones (nee Williams) of 4 Arthur Street, Kingsland, Holyhead. Raised by his grandparents, Owen and Margaret Williams of 4 Greenfield Terrace. Worked before the war at Holyhead library, the town’s post office and later as an LNWR ship’s steward.
- Robert Williams, Stoker, 2007/S, RNR, HMS Victory. Died, of illness, aged 30, on 2 March 1919 at Portsmouth. HMS Victory was the naval barracks at Portsmouth. Holyhead (Maeshyfryd) Burial Board Cemetery. Son of Henry Williams of 15 Vulcan Street, Holyhead; husband of Mary Elizabeth Williams of Vulcan Stores, 31 Vulcan Street, Holyhead.
- Robert John Williams, Leading Stoker, 302211, RN, HMS Drake. Died, aged 34, on 2 October 1917 off Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland. Plymouth Naval Memorial. Son of cattle porter Lewis Williams and Elizabeth Williams of 7 Old Post Road, Holyhead. Worked as a wagon greaser joining the Royal Navy in December 1902.
